NEWS

Dr. Noa Roman-Muniz

noa.jpgWe hope that you enjoyed the first edition of the Colorado Dairy News in its fresh format. As promised we will be sending the newsletter on a monthly basis rather than the older bimonthly schedule.  We will also be trying lots of new things. Please contact me, Ragan Adams at radams@colostate.edu, to share what you do or do not like about this new form of an old reliable effort. The Colorado Dairy  News is a combined venture between CSU’s ILM and Dairy Cooperative Extension designed to help the Colorado dairy industry.

This month Dr. Noa Roman-Muniz, a veterinarian with the ILM, will talk to you about the Dairy Management Program in Spanish (DMPS).  Noa, along with Drs. Frank Garry and Dave Van Metre of the ILM, have been champions of the need for better education of Spanish dairy workers since Noa came to CSU as an intern in 2001 after graduating from veterinary school at the University of Wisconsin. Following her internship Noa pursued a masters in education through the ILM graduate program.

For the last 5 years she has given numerous presentations both on farm and in larger groups to dairy workers. Noa was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Her parents own a dairy farm and ever since the age of 9 she spent most of her weekends and summers helping out on the dairy. Her engaging personality, bilingual ability, and broad veterinary knowledge combine to make her a very effective teacher and communicator. For more information concerning any of her educational programs, contact Dr. Noa Roman-Muniz at 970-297-4106.

Dr David Kohl from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg,Virginia rolled into the auditorium to share his perspective on the financial side of the dairy industry after spending the morning as the keynote speaker at The Colorado Farm Show. Although it is impossible to capture the energy and wealth of information he shared in person, he did provide a power point presentation that includes many of his ideas. Dr Kohl’s weekly website columns can be found at http://www.farm-credit.com (click on "Ag Globe Trotter") and http://www.cornandsoybeandigest.com (click on "Road Warrior of Agriculture").

The 18th Annual Colorado Dairy Nutrition Conference Proceedings: Part One

The 18th Annual Colorado Dairy Nutrition Conference was held January 23rd at the Union Colony Civic Center. Seven experts addressed the audience on topics as diverse as business benchmarks, neonatal calf health, feed efficiency, and ethanol by-product use.

For the convenience of those unable to attend and receive the proceedings three of these papers are presented in this issue. The remaining four papers will be available in the April CDN.

Neonatal Calf Feeding Strategies

Dr Jerry Olson, Senior Veterinarian of Pfizer Animal Health, reviewed common neonatal calf feeding strategies. The analysis he reviewed showed that the collective value of feeding 4 quarts of good quality colostrum to a calf could be as high as $400 due to reduced mortality, reduced treatment costs, improved rates of gain and larger size calves at breeding and improved production.

Cow Milk Allergy or Lactose Intolerance

Consumption of cow’s milk and milk products provides many essential nutrients including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, Vitamins A and D (if fortified) and B 12, riboflavin, and niacin. Unfortunately, some individuals may avoid milk and milk products unnecessarily because of adverse reactions to these foods. Last summer the National Dairy Council published a paper reviewing 2 health conditions, lactose intolerance and cow milk protein allergy, that cause people to avoid the consumption of milk. This treatise explains these conditions in depth; thus, shedding light on many misunderstandings related to perceived milk intolerance.

Feed Analysis Consortium

At the Colorado Dairy Nutrition Conference reference was made numerous times to the Feed Analysis Consortium http://www.feedac.org, please log on and check this group out. This may be an important resource for your business.

Feed AC was originally established in August 2003 as the Ruminant Feed Analysis Consortium (RFAC) with the financial support of 17 Founding Sponsors ($170,000). The first official meeting of the consortium was held October 20, 2003, in conjunction with the Cornell Nutrition Conference. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together the Founding Sponsors, as well as some researchers and feed analysts, to begin to develop the vision and organizational structure of the consortium.

Since that first meeting, significant strides have been made to enhance the overall vision, scope, and organizational structure of the consortium. The organization is no longer a university-based industrial consortium with a single primary investigator, but instead has a Board of Directors. The administrative services of FASS have been garnered, and the term “ruminant” has been removed from the incorporated name. These changes reflect the need for a North American Feed Information System that serves all animal industries and provides for bringing together all of the interests and expertise that exist in the area of feed analysis and measurement of nutrient bioavailability.
