Meat Evaluation Judging Team Print E-mail
Colorado State University has proven to be nationally competitive and built a strong reputation in Meat and Livestock Evaluation, and here is your chance to become involved in the Dept. of Animal Sciences.  CSU offers an opportunity to excel on the Meat Animal Evaluation Team.  This CSU judging team competes at the national Meat Animal Evaluation Contest hosted in March at the Oklahoma City Stockyards and then at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK.  This contest combines all important factors in animal evaluation and truly is a great opportunity to shine among the nation's best livestock evaluators.

The contest includes 4 separate portions of the contest.  The first is the visual evaluation of market animals (such as AN 250 class) to determine backfat, ribeye area, yield grade and quality grades for cattle as well as evaluation factors for swine and sheep.  Next, is the breeding portion in which you judge 10 classes (such as bulls and heifers) and have check type questions on 6 of the classes.  Also, there is a meat judging contest where you will judge carcasses, determine value of carcasses, and yield and quality grade cattle carcasses.  Finally, the team participates in a 12 minute group presentation regarding a topic relevant to animal agriculture.

Ideally, this team is for Juniors and Seniors with an interest in Animal Agriculture.  This contest is a tremendous opportunity to learn a great deal about animal evaluation while combining real life practicality in the evaluation of livestock production factors.  You can also receive 2 credits for your involvement.
