January

  • Temple Grandin’s book, Animals in Translation was #10 on the New York Times Bestseller List and #3 on the local bestseller list. 

February

  • Not only did the Meat’s Judging Team win the NWSS contest in January (CSU had not won the contest since 1980!)  but they won the Fort Worth Stock Show.  They defeated the 2nd place team (Texas A&M!!!) by 83 points.  This reportedly has never been done by a CSU team! 
  • Coach Chad Murnin led his Livestock Judging Team to a victory this weekend.  The team participated in the Southwestern Livestock Expo in Fort Worth TX on February 4th.  They were High Team Overall, High Team Sheep, 2nd High Team Cattle, 5th High Team Swine and 2nd High Team in Oral Reasons. 

March

  • Temple Grandin was featured on Prime Time (ABC) on March 3rd. 
  • The 2005 CSU Meat Animal Evaluation team competed in the National Contest in Brookings, SD on March 20, 21, and 22.  This contest combines live animal evaluation, livestock judging of breeding animals, meats judging, and an oral communications division.  The CSU team finished in 5th Place with several individuals having good days.  Team members consisted of Jake Tiedeman, Jason Jordan, Tanner Carpenter, Marianna Brown, Danica McComb, Dustin Welp, and Quinten LePlatt. 
  • Dr. Jim Heird was the recipient of the 2005 College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Alumni Council Distinguished Alumnus Award.  This award is presented annually to alumnus “for outstanding achievement in the academic or corporate community, and/or noteworthy public service, which has brought distinction to both the individual, the College, and the University of Tennessee.”
  • On March 12, David Denniston’s Team was the High Team Overall at the Denver Rocky Mountain Horse Expo Youth and Collegiate Judging Contest.

April

  • The Bull Sale at BIC was a huge success.  Bill Wailes just reported that the average sale price was $2009 and there were 33 head.
  • Lianna Scholtz (Equine Science) and Bill Thomas (Animal Science) were named Outstanding Seniors at the Ag Banquet.
  • Lynn Doran, a Hughes Undergraduate Research Scholar working in Dr. Hossner's lab, was honored at the CSU Undergraduate Research and Creativity Program. Her poster, entitled "Effects of Body Condition Scores and Fat Depots on Gene Expression of Fatty Acid Synthase in Horses", received an Honors Award at the Awards Ceremony last week. She was one of only two in the College of Agricultural Sciences to win an award. Lynn is a sophomore majoring in Animal Sciences and is interested in Nutrition. Congratulate her on a job well done.
  • On April 26th, David Denniston’s Judging Team was High Team Overall at the Fort Worth Texas Arabian Nationals Judging Contest.

May

  • 2005 AMERICAN PAINT HORSE ASSOCIATION SPRING SWEEPSTAKES COLLEGIATE JUDGING CONTEST.  Colorado State University Team Members: Katie Johnson, Megan Wagner, Tessa Fiamengo, Will French, Dana Alexander, Jenna Johnson, Heidi Nelson, Meghan Simpson, Lisa Britton, April Mendenhall 
    • Team Results: 1st and 5th High Teams Performance, 4th High Team Performance, 4th   High Teams Reasons, and HIGH TEAM OVERALL!!!
  • John Sofos was elected Chair-Elect of the Food Microbiology Division of the Institute of Food Technologists. In addition, he was reappointed by USDA Secretary Mike Johanns to a second term on the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods.
  • Courtney Heller (Colorado State) and Kevin Brueggemeier (Ohio State) were selected for internships with the U.S. Meat Export Federation.  The internship program is a joint effort between AMSA, USMEF and other organizations.  For Courtney, who went to Japan, this was her second major recent international experience.  She completed a study abroad program in Asia in 2002.  Courtney holds a B.S. in Animal Science from Michgan State University and is pursuing her M.S. in Animal Science with Keith Belk at Colorado State.
  • The May 7, 2005 Calcutta was a huge success. Over 50 steers were sold with an average price of $320.  Approximately 150 people were in attendance. A special thank you to Eddie Behrends and his crew for the great meal they provided.  Great job to the Meats and Livestock Team and Brett Kaysen.  

August

  • Brandon Carlson, Catie Simpson, and Tanner Machado recently attended the Poster Competition at the International Congress.  We are pleased to announce that Brandon placed 2nd. This is a great honor - great job Brandon.

  • The book Antimicrobials in Food was released and Dr. John Sofos was one of the Editors.  At the annual meeting of the International Association for Food Protection in Baltimore, MD on August 16, 2005, Dr. John Sofos was presented with the President's Recognition Award for his service to the association.

September

  • Dr. John Sofos’ book, Improving the Safety of Fresh Meat was recently released.  He served as the editor for the book.

October

  • In Kansas City, Missouri on October 24th, Dr. Gary Smith was inducted into the American Hereford Association Hall of Merit.
  • Celina Johnson won the National CEA4-HA Tyro Award.
  • At the Arabian Nationals Judging Contest in Albuquerque, NY, David Denniston’s team was High Team Overall

December

  • Dr. David Ames received the Ohio State College Distinguished Alumni Award
