What is Camp Round-UP?

  • Camp Round-UP is an opportunity for youth ages 14-18 to join in a fun and enriching learning environment immersed in animal agriculture.
  • All backgrounds of youth ages 14-18 are invited to learn about Food-Animal Agriculture and Equine Sciences through participating in hands-on, science and math based activities with livestock, tours of state-of-the art facilities, and presentations by Colorado State University’s distinguished faculty and graduate students.
  • Curriculum will be presented in a fun, engaging format, and is linked to Colorado Department of Education Model Content Standards for Science, Math and Agriculture.
  • Lessons incorporate science, math and agricultural issues, while developing teamwork and friendship with fellow campers by encouraging a common interest in the livestock industry.

  • 2:30–4:30 MEAT SCIENCE (4 stations) at Animal Science Building 114
    • Meat Science Overview –Ryan Murphy, Meat Sciences Graduate Student (2:30-3:00 pm)
    • Carcass Evaluation – Phil Bass, Meat Sciences Graduate Student (3:30-4:00 pm)

Sunday, June 17

  • 6:30 – Wake Up Knock!
  • 7:00-7:30 Breakfast at Animal Science Building
  • 7:30–Leave Animal Science and travel by van to ARDEC
  • 8:00-9:30 POULTRY SCIENCE (3-4 stations) at ARDEC with Ms. Donna La Chey, Graduate Student, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, CSU.
    • Poultry Life cycle and embryonic development
    • Breeds of Chickens and their importance in animal science (Egg, Meat, etc)
    • Comparative Physiology 
    • Eggs  (porosity, Candling, etc)
    • Poultry Products
    • Poultry Agricultural Issues
  • 9:30–10:00 Snacks/Fun activity (Egg Relay)
  • 10:00-11:30 SWINE SCIENCE (3-4 stations) at ARDEC with Mr. Brett Kaysen, Extension Youth Livestock Specialist,  Department of Animal Sciences
    • Swine life cycle, breeds and their importance in animal science, genetics
    • Tour of Swine Facilities and Swine Ag issues discussion (biosecurity, crates, weaning, etc.)
    • Processing of piglets.  Description and reasoning for castration, ear notching, tail banding
  • 11:30–12:15 Lunch / fun activity at ARDEC
  • 12:15-1:00 Leave ARDEC and travel by van to Cozy Cow (Windsor).  
  • 1:00-3:30 DAIRY SCIENCE (4-5 stations) at Cozy Cow Dairy
    • 1-1:25 Gestation Wheel/discussion of Cow Life Cycle      
    • 1:25-1:50 Milking Parlor, Breeds and Uses –  Mr. & Mrs Les Hardesty, Owners- Cozy Cow Dairy
    • 1:50-2:15 Feed Bunk – Feedstuffs, Dairy Judging, Dairy Conformation –  Mr. Bill Wailes, Department Head, Department of Animal Sciences
    • 2:15-2:40 Making Butter          
    • 2:40-3:05 Gestation Wheel project

    • Ag Issues – Cloning, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s)
    • Tour the Sheep Unit, CAM the RAM, Discussion of processing lambs (Castration, tail banding, weaning)
  • 6:00-7:00 Dinner at ARDEC, Presentation by Dr. Nancy Irlbeck, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, College of Agriculture
  • 7:00–8:30 Spinning and felting project – Dr. Nancy Irlbeck.

Monday, June 18

  • 7:00-7:30 Breakfast at Animal Science Building
  • 7:30–Leave Animal Science and travel by van to Equine Center
  • 7:45-9:15 EQUINE REPRODUCTION LABORATORY (3 stations). Dr. Jason Bruemmer,  Associate Professor, Equine Reproduction
    • 7:45–8:15   Semen Collection and Evaluation, Mare Behavior, Stallion Behavior, Semen Dosage (Math), Affects on Sperm Production
    • 8:15-8:45  Six Stocks (Mare Repro and Hormones), Five Mares in Different Stages of estrus, Discuss physical signs and do speculum exam (critical thinking), Ultrasound, Ag Issues - Assisted Reproductive Techniques
    • 8:45-9:15   Foaling and Foaling Management in ERL classroom
  • 9:15-10:15 EQUINE USES (3 stations)
    • Packing and Outfitting – Ms. Lindsey Eby, Equine and Animal Sciences Graduate, Ag Ambassador.

  • 10:15-10:30 - Snacks/Fun activity  (3 legged barrel race, bob for apples)
  • 10:30-11:30 - EQUINE CONFORMATION (4 stations)
    • Equine Form to Function – Ms. Megan Grieve, Equine Sciences Major and CSU Champion Horse Judging Team alumni.
    • Station 1 - All campers, basic conformation, parts of the horse and how the correct conformation and angles affect performance, deviations from this ideal affect performance and contribute to lameness and health issues.
    • Station 2 - Campers will split into groups.  Number in groups will depend on the number of horses present to participate in station 2.  Campers will be assigned a horse as well as a set of labels.  Campers will be first required to correctly place the labels on their horse in the correct position for inspection by staff.  Campers will them compete against each other in a timed event based on how quickly they can correctly place their labels. 
    • Station 3 - Campers split into groups.  Critical thinking station.  Campers are given either several horses or pictures to evaluate.  They will look at conformation, determine what, if any, the defect and how that will affect performance and/or lameness issues.  
    • Testing - Campers given a picture of a horse with conformation labels and a word bank., place the correct word from the bank on the horse in the correct position.
  • 11:30– Leave Equine Center and travel by van to ARDEC
  • 12:00-1:00 Lunch at ARDEC.  Presentation on Ag Issues/Agriculture Field/Conservation Easements by Dr. Tom Field, Professor, Beef Management Systems - Department of Animal Sciences
  • 1:00–3:00 BEEF SCIENCE (3 stations)
    • 1:00-1:40 Cattle life cycle and overview of Beef Industry, Reproduction, Agricultural Issues, tour of cattle facilities - Dr. Tom Field 
    • 1:40-2:20 Ultrasound and live animal evaluation - Mr. Brandon Carlson, Meat Sciences Graduate Student
    • 2:20-3:00 and breeds and their importance in animal science, Genetics - Mr. Jim Latoski, Breeding and Genetics Graduate Student
  • 3:00-3:30  Snacks/Fun activity
  • 3:30-4:45 Beef Nutrition (2 stations)

L
odging:  Students will stay in the CSU dormitories on the CSU campus. Chaperones will be on each wing of each floor.
Meals: Students will be provided with a continental breakfast, boxed-lunch, and dinner each day.
ARDEC—Agriculture Research Development and Education Center: Much of the student’s education will occur at ARDEC, in the Taylor auditorium, a state-of-the-art animal handling   facility, feedlot, feed storage, and metabolism laboratories.  Sheep, swine, and cow/calf units are in close proximity for ease of student involvement.
Department of Animal Science building: The Meat’s program for Camp Round-UP will be held in the CSU Meat Lab and associated microbiology labs found in the departmental building.
CSU Equine Center— 2 indoor arenas, box stalls, classrooms, and is adjacent to the Equine Reproduction Laboratory where mare and stallion research is conducted.
Tours:  Local area food-animal agricultural tours including dairy, dairy processing, and a feedlot are being planned.

Space is Limited for this one-of-a-kind opportunity. 

Cost Includes: 4 days, 3 nights double-occupancy accommodations in CSU dormitories with all meals. Transportation, off-campus tour fees, Animal Science course curriculum, Camp T-shirt, notebook, and other “2007 Camp Round-UP” memorabilia.

  • Discount Registration. Registration received by May 10th, get a $25 discount! —$350.  $50 non-refundable deposit due with registration, remainder due by May 15, 2007.
  • Late Registration. Register May 10th to May 30, —$375.
