Wow this semester has gone fast. The students are taking finals this week and packing their things to return home or start their internships for the summer. As a department we were busy through out April and May and are excited to keep the momentum going throughout the summer. We have some great opportunities to connect with our alumni and friends through out the state but first we would like to recognize our students, staff and faculty for their outstanding work.

College of Agricultural Sciences Shepardson Awards
4 honors each year and the department was fortunate to receive three of these awards.

  • Dr. Terry Engle – Meritorious Teaching Award
  • Dr. Kraig Peel – Faculty Teaching Award
  • Justin Dodsworth, senior – Student Leadership Award

Some of our faculty/staff were recognized by the University at the Celebrate CSU Luncheon.

  • Shannon Archibeque-Engle received the Multi-Ethnic Distinguished Service Awards and Dr. Lynne Kesel was honored as a Distinguished Administrative Professional.
  • Receiving the highest honor - Dr. John Sofos has been named a University Distinguished Professor; a title conferred upon the most outstanding faculty members of Colorado State University for the duration of their association with the institution.  This status is determined by records of performance ranking him among the most outstanding members of his discipline, as reflected by his research, publications, exhibitions, artistic performances or other mode of accomplishments appropriate to his discipline.

Successful Event:
- Spring Branding Student Recognition Banquet, April 27. The student organized Spring Branding Banquet, recongnized all student clubs, judging teams and organizations in the department. Each group recognized their members, while the department had an opportunity to showcase their recent awards. The prime rib dinner was catered by the CSU Meats Lab and the students raised $1400 through a silent auction that was sent to benefit the South/East Colorado Ranchers/Farmers.
 
Mark your calendars:
Beef Improvement Federation, June 6-9. The registration deadline for the annual meeting and 40th anniversary celebration of BIF is fast approaching.  The meeting will be held at the Hilton in Fort Collins, Colo, and the pre-registration deadline is May 15.  It will focus on the future of genetic evaluation and improvement with a variety of presenters from around the country. The Department of Animal Sciences and the College of Agricultural Sciences are planning "Camp Round-UP", an animal agriculture educational program for youth ages 14-18. The camp held June 16-19, 2007, will educate students about Beef, Dairy, Equine, Swine, Sheep, Poultry and Meat Science.
