| Two University Distinguished Professors in One Department |

It is almost unheard of to have two University Distinguished Professors in one college, let alone one department. The Department of Animal Sciences currently employs two Colorado State University Distinguished Professors: Dr. Bernard Rollin and Dr. John Sofos. Dr. Bernard Rollin is a professor of animal sciences, philosophy and biomedical sciences at Colorado State. Rollin developed the world's first courses in veterinary medical ethics, ethical issues in animal science, and biology combined with philosophy. Rollin teaches these courses at CSU and has helped universities around the world develop similar programs. The American Veterinary Medical Association recently recognized him with its Humane Award, which honors efforts on behalf of animals and exceptional compassion for animal welfare.
Dr. Rollin and Dr. Sofos join an emeritus Distinguished Professor in the Animal Sciences Department, Dr. Gary C. Smith, who received the honor in 1993. Distinguished Professors have received national and international competitive awards, prizes, honors, and/or other forms of recognition of outstanding achievement. They earn the title of University Distinguished Professor because of their records of continuing and cumulative accomplishment in their areas of specialization, artistry or expertise. Teaching and mentoring are also considered in the selection process.
