| Animal Sciences Hires Breeding and Genetics Professor |

The Department of Animal Sciences is excited to announce the recent hire of Dr. Denny Crews as a full professor specializing in Animal Breeding and Genetics. He is currently senior scientist and program leader for beef quantitative genomics at Lethbridge, Alberta and an AAFC (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada) national study leader for livestock genetics and genomics.
Dr. Denny Crews was raised on a family-owned cattle ranch and citrus operation in southern Florida. Denny was active in 4-H and agricultural leadership activities, and he showed purebred Brahman cattle from the family ranch. His graduate studies at the University of Florida at Gainesville led to an M.S. degree in beef cattle science in 1992. He was winner of the Beef Improvement Federation Baker Award in both 1995 and 1996. Denny obtained his Ph.D. degree in beef quantitative genetics in 1996 from Louisiana State University. From January, 1997 to May, 1998, Dr. Crews was a post-doctoral researcher in beef genetics at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Research Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta. In 2004, Dr. Crews was winner of the Young Scientist award of the Western Section, American Society of Animal Science. In his career, he has co-supervised 12 M.S. and Ph.D. students. Dr. Crews is author of more than 45 papers in refereed journals, 5 books and book chapters, over 50 invited conference proceedings, 12 software tools, and he has given more than seventy invited presentations in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Ireland, and Brazil. To date, his research has attracted more than $5 million in external funding. Dr. Crews is also an Associate Editor of Animal Genetics for the Journal of Animal Science, and he is on the editorial board for two additional international scientific journals. Dr. Crews is an advisor to the breed improvement and National Cattle Evaluation efforts of four North American beef breed associations and three central bull tests. He also chairs the feed intake and efficiency guidelines subcommittee of the Beef Improvement Federation. Denny currently lives in Lethbridge, Alberta with his wife, Ronda, and their two children, Emily and Garrett. Dr. Crews will be joining the faculty this August. |
