This position is in the Senior Executive Service (SES) - Career Reserved.  Positions in the SES are not graded.  Only one position to be filled under this announcement.  The salary range is ($114,468 - $158,500) per annum.  SES employees are also eligible for bonuses and awards based on performance.  Veteran's preference is not applicable to the SES.  The selectee is subject to a one-year probationary period unless currently serving under an SES appointment.  Visit www.opm.gov/ses.asp for additional information and benefits for SES employees.

This position is that of Director of the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (U.S.MARC) at Clay Center, Nebraska.  The Center is in the Northern Plains Area of USDA's Agricultural Research Service.  U.S.MARC is the nation's premiere research institution devoted solely to the improvement of the meat industry.  The Center Director provides scientific leadership and operational accountability for the Center's research programs.  The Center encompasses six research units with a mission to develop scientific information and new technology to solve high priority problems for the U.S. beef, sheep and swine industries.  Objectives are to increase efficiency of production while maintaining a lean, high quality, safe product ultimately benefiting the consumer as well as the production and agribusiness sectors of animal agriculture.  About 50 percent of the research is with beef cattle, 30 percent with swine, and 20 percent with seep.  Current research objective require female breeding populations of approximately 6,500 cattle, representing 18 breeds; 3,000 sheep, representing 10 breeds, and 700 swine litters per year, representing 5 breeds.  Experimental feedlots for cattle and sheep and facilities for breeding herds essential components for the comprehensive research program.  The research program complements research conducted elsewhere by USDA and is cooperative with the University of Nebraska and other Land-Grant universities throughout the country.
