J. Daryl Tatum, Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, was born and raised in Fredericksburg, Texas. Daryl gained an early interest in animal agriculture from his father, who was a Texas vocational agriculture teacher. He attended Texas A&M University, where he received his B.S. (1974), M.S. (1975), and Ph.D. (1978) degrees in Animal/Meat Science. Dr. Tatum joined the Animal Sciences faculty at Colorado State University in 1979, after a brief appointment as an Assistant Professor of Animal Science at Texas Tech University. During his academic career, Daryl has taught several courses in animal science including Introductory Animal Science, Introductory Meat Science, Physiology of Domestic Animals, Advanced Meat Science, and Growth and Body Composition. Currently at Colorado State, Daryl teaches an undergraduate course in Live Animal and Carcass Evaluation.

Tatum’s research interests include identification of pre-harvest and post-harvest factors that affect meat quality and palatability; evaluation, grading/classification and marketing of livestock and meat; and meat animal growth and development. He has published over 75 full-length articles in refereed scientific journals and more than 350 additional research and extension contributions. Many of Dr. Tatum’s research findings have been adopted for use by the livestock and meat industries, both domestically and internationally.

Dr. Tatum’s professional accomplishments have been recognized by receipt of the Texas A&M University Distinguished Graduate Assistant Teaching Award (awarded by the TAMU Association of Former Students), the Western Section American Society of Animal Science Young Scientist Award, the National Association of Meat Purveyors Educator’s Award, the National Livestock Grading and Marketing Association Service Award, the Western Section American Society of Animal Science Distinguished Teacher Award, the American Society of Animal Science Meat Research Award, and the "Top Choice " Award presented by the Colorado Cattle Feeders Association.

Daryl served as President of the National Livestock Grading and Marketing Association in 1982 and President of the Intercollegiate Meat Coaches Association in 1989. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Animal Science and has served as a technical advisor to a number of organizations and industry groups.
