Peel, Kraig

Kraig Peel grew up in Post, Texas in the lower panhandle of Texas. He grew up on a beef cattle/farming operation. Kraig received his B.S. degree in Animal Science from Angelo State University in 1988. After graduation, Kraig was employed by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service as an Extension Agent in Val Verde County, Del Rio, Texas. He worked as the 4-H coordinator for 3 years.

Kraig then accepted a position as a ranch manager for a 74,000 acre ranch between Del Rio and San Angelo. The ranch was very diversified with Angora goats, sheep, cattle, wildlife and Spanish goats. Kraig also became bilingual in Spanish and English during his time on the Texas border.

Kraig then returned to graduate school at Texas A&M in the fall of 1995. Kraig received his M.S. in nutrition in the spring of 1997. He then received his Ph.D. in 2000 with primary research in meat science. While in graduate school at Texas A&M, he was involved in a variety of research initiatives including meat science, nutrition and various aspects of reproduction. He also taught a variety of labs at Texas A&M as well as guest lectures in department of Animal Science courses. Kraig accepted a lecturer position at Sam Houston State University while finishing his dissertation. He then accepted an assistant professor position at SHSU and remained there for another year. Kraig's appointment at SHSU was 100% teaching. He taught 17 courses in four semesters.

Kraig's current position of Assistant Professor is as the coordinator for the integrated resource management program. He has helped to develop an innovative new graduate program in IRM. Kraig is the primary instructor for A-630 and a contributing instructor in all of the IRM courses. Kraig routinely guest lectures in a variety of the College of Agricultural sciences courses.

Kraig is married and he and his wife have four children, Shayla, Keri, Kace and Sawyer.
